Feline diabetes commonly is diagnosed in mature cats; however, it has
not been reported in immature cats. The clinical course of a case of d
iabetes mellitus in a five-month-old, male, domestic shorthair kitten
is described. Similar to juvenile human insulin-dependent diabetes mel
litus (IDDM), the kitten had an acute onset of clinical signs and was
insulinopenic, ketosis-prone, and required exogenous insulin. The path
ophysiology of human IDDM is discussed and compared with findings in t
he kitten.
