Fractal analysis was applied to river planforms in order to define the
ir scaling properties. The fractal dimension of river paths was estima
ted using the Richardson method, and compared to different factors inf
luencing the river geometry, such as the parent rock and soil types, t
he bed slope of rivers, and hydrologic and tectonic factors. We propos
e a model that accounts for two distinct power law patterns observed i
n two scale domains.
