Accurate measurements of the frequency response of the nonlinear refra
ctive index induced by the combined effects of Kerr nonlinearity with
electrostrictional excitation of acoustic waves in optical fibers are
presented. A detailed experimental investigation of both standard (zer
o-dispersion wavelength, lambda(0) approximate to 1.31 mu m) and dispe
rsion-shifted (lambda(0) = 1.55 mu m) single-mode fibers showed the pr
esence of several resonant peaks induced by the electrostrictive nonli
nearity in the fiber structure. This investigation has provided better
insight into the frequency behavior of the electrostriction-induced a
coustic waves in optical fibers. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.
