Abstract
The Yb atoms occupy independent, slightly distorted octahedral sites. All the metal sites are fully occupied. The structure consists of pair s of [YbS6] octahedra forming chains parallel to the [111] axis. In th is direction, between two pairs of octahedra, there is an empty octahe dral site. The compound may also be described as a layered structure; each layer is alternately composed of Yb and S atoms.
