Abstract
A bacterial strain which eliminates NH3 by aerobic nitrification/heter otrophic denitrification below a pO(2) of 30 % saturation was enriched in continuous culture from the nitrification step of a leachate-treat ment plant and isolated as pure culture. The strain uses acetate, prop ionate, butyrate, and ethanol as carbon sources and belongs to the bet a-subgroup of proteobacteria. Reaction parameters for deammonification and substrate utilization were determined.
