Eb. Bohlke et Je. Mccosker, REVIEW OF THE MORAY EEL GENUS SCUTICARIA AND INCLUDED SPECIES (PISCES, ANGUILLIFORMES, MURAENIDAE, UROPTERYGIINAE), Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 148, 1997, pp. 171-176
Scuticaria Jordan and Snyder, 1901, subfamily Uropterygiinae, is defin
ed and recognized as a valid muraenid genus, with two species, S. okin
awae (Jordan and Snyder, 1901) (previously known as Scuticaria bennett
it) and S. tigrina (Lesson, 1828). The species are diagnosed, with not
es on type specimens of the species and their synonyms; a lectotype is
designated for Ichthyophis tigrinus. Gymnomuraena bennettii Gunther,
1870 is synonymized with Channomuraena vittata (Richardson, 1844). Dif
ferences between Scuticaria tigrina and the similar-appearing Gymnotho
rax polyuranodon (Bleeker, 1853) and Uropterygius polyspilus (Regan, 1
909) are enumerated.
