Severe Postpartum Bleeding and APC Resistance - Case Report: We report
on a spontaneous vaginal delivery of a 35-year old woman (Grav VI/Par
III) the 38th gestational week. The postpartal period was complicated
by severe postpartum bleeding. The patient was diagnosed to suffer fr
om APC resistance. APC resistance is the most common cause of heredita
ry thromobembolic complications. There is a resulting hypercoagulabili
ty of blood because of the resistance against activated protein C. We
therefore conclude that APC resistance could lead to hypercoagulation
and may by the means of coagulopathy aggravate uterine postpartum blee
ding complications. In case of pregnancy and delivery not only thrombo
embolic complications but also the development of severe bleeding comp
lications should be kept in mind prospectively.
