This article begins by exploring the links between the University of L
ondon Institute of Education, the Geographical Association and geograp
hy education. The author then considers why he has found geography so
challenging and focuses on three 'places of meaning' for him, and for
each case a particular people-environment issue is described. First, f
or Blackpool, it is the issue of sand extraction; second, for west Lon
don, the development of the Ealing Broadway Centre; and third, for Sed
bergh it is the construction of a golf course. A number of challenges
faced by geography are then discussed: image; communication between ge
ographers; keeping up-to-date; and professional development. The artic
le concludes by considering some of the challenges faced by the Geogra
phical Association.
