The site of Ain Maarouf near El Hajeb, Morocco, has yielded 12 species
of Vertebrates, besides an Homo erectus-like femoral diaphysis. The m
ain elements of this fauna are : the rare association of Elephas iolen
sis and Loxodonta atlantica, a zebra close to the Equus mauritanicus o
f Tighenif, Algeria. possibly a true horse, and especially the alcelap
hine antelope Parmularius ambiguus, previously known only from Tigheni
f. This suggest that Ain Maarouf is close in age to the Algerian site,
of early middle Pleistocene age, and is certainly among the earliest
Hominid-bearing localities of Morocco.
