In operative conditions of the most important transport applications o
f Bi-2223/Ag super conducting tapes, like cables for power transmissio
n lines and superconducting windings, the tapes will be subjected to m
echanical stresses and magnetic fields causing the degradation of thei
r transport properties. In this work we investigated the simultaneous
effects of mechanical tensile stress and magnetic fields, up to 140 mT
, applied parallel and perpendicular to the tape surface on the critic
al current density J(c) at 77 K of Bi-2223/Ag composite tapes. The J(c
) vs. strain measurements showed an abrupt J(c) decay above a critical
strain value, epsilon(cr).
