An apparatus is described which was designed for fast and accurate mea
surements of critical current up to 30 A in oxide superconductors. It
is battery based, for voltage noise minimization, which allows the use
of the 0.1 mu V.cm(-1) criterion in short samples and makes use of al
l-solid-state switching. It is designed for fast (1 s) static curl ent
measurements and provides current reversal for ther mal e.m.f. compen
sation. Results are reported and commented of tests made on strips and
tubes of stainless steel coated with thick films of high-T-c supercon
ductors.
