An investigation of stresses around the edge of a 50% through-wall 'ra
ce-track' (elongated pit) defect introduced into a steel beam sample w
as conducted. Stresses were measured by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN
) using a magnetic disk read-head as the detector for the MBN probe. T
he study also examined the change in Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) signa
l as a function of increasing applied bending stress. Experimental res
ults were compared to numerical calculations obtained from a finite el
ement stress modelling package and found to be in good agreement.
