Objective: In a follow-up study, women with ectopic pregnancies were t
reated laparoscopically by closing the salpingostomy wound with a fibr
in sealant. Their postoperative pregnancy rates and operative results
were compared with those of established techniques. Method: Ectopic pr
egnancies were removed by salpingostomy, and the wound was sealed by d
ripping a fibrin glue onto the (approximated) wound edges. Results: Fo
llowing salpingostomy and consecutive sealing of the wound, 59 women s
till wanted to have a baby. Pregnancies occurred in 92%. Intrauterine
pregnancies were found in 61%, the relapse rate on the operated side w
as 15%. After the operation, 5 patients had a second ectopic pregnancy
before or after a normal one. In case of the presence of only one or
both operated tubes, the intrauterine pregnancy rate was 77% and the r
elapse rate 11%. All pregnancies were obtained without any medical hel
p, and 41 women (69%) had a healthy baby. Conclusion: The simple fibri
n sealing technique yielded results comparable to those of the techniq
ues established so far.
