Abstract
Multilevel security poses many challenging problems for transaction pr ocessing. The challenges are due to the conflicting requirements impos ed by confidentiality, integrity, and availability-the three component s of security. We identify these requirements on transaction processin g in Multilevel Secure (MLS) database management systems (DBMSs) and s urvey the efforts of a number of researchers to meet these requirement s. While our emphasis is primarily on centralized systems based on ker nelized architecture, we briefly overview the research in the distribu ted MLS DBMSs as well.
