Abstract
A general theory of Toda chains is presented. The chains are treated a s Lagrange dynamic systems with one continuous and one discrete time. The theory is based on the fact that the chains are invariant with res pect to transformations that are analogous to the Legendre transformat ions in classical mechanics.
