Abstract
Spontaneous stepwise thinning of free standing films was observed abov e the phase transitions SmA - iso, SmA - N in several compounds. The f ree standing films thickness decreases on heating above these transiti ons in successive steps. A decrease of thickness occurs at some temper ature T-max(N) above which the N-layer film cannot be stable. The film thickness can be described by a power law function of T-max. Mechanis m of the phenomenon is discussed.
