Results on the preparation and thermoanalytical investigation of aliph
atic bismaleamic acids and bismaleimides are presented. Correlations w
ere established between the chemical structure and the thermal propert
ies. The melting point and the thermal stability of the bismaleimides
decrease as the number of carbon atoms in the structure increases. Che
mically imidized samples have significantly higher thermal stability,
which is almost independent of the chemical structure. Thermal polymer
ization begins just after the melting of the materials. A thermal frag
mentation scheme is proposed, based on the results of mass spectrometr
y.
