Abstract
We have studied the rearrangement of a smectic layer induced by asymme tric voltage pulses in ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crys tals. This layer rotation is reversible and takes place in both non-tr eated and rubbed cells. The optical response during layer rotation has been studied, and it is confirmed that the direction of the optical a xis can be reversibly controlled by the accumulated number of applied voltage pulses.
