The solubilization and biodegradation of microbial cells (cells of yea
st) by an aerobic thermophilic microbial population was investigated o
ver a 290 h period. In this case, the yeast cells were used as a stand
ardized substitute for the complex biopolymeric particulates present i
n actual waste sludge feeds. The process is initiated by enzymatic deg
radation of the cell walls followed by growth on the released soluble
substrate at low dissolved oxygen concentration.
