By considering an expression for the energy of a cell containing an an
tiferroelectric smectic liquid crystal with only nearest-neighbor inte
ractions between layers we conclude that while the transition to and f
rom ferroelectric alignment can propagate as a stable solitary wave in
the bulk of the material, under certain conditions a separate surface
wave can also exist.
