The growing role of biosensors in analytical chemistry is stimulating
research to develop new sensors and improve the merits of existing one
s. Particularly important are rapid response, high sensitivity and sta
bility in long operational and storage lifetimes. New enzyme immobiliz
ation procedures allow better sensor characteristics and examples of s
uch potentiometric biosensors are presented. Biochemically modified io
n-selective membranes, prepared using procedures discussed here, shoul
d find wider application, e.g. as sensing elements of optodes. (C) 199
