In this investigation, a compaction study was performed on magnesia, z
irconia and titania ceramic powders. All the powder samples were compa
cted in an opposed anvil apparatus at different pressures upto a maxim
um pressure of 1100 MPa. The Heckel equation, which is used to describ
e compaction behaviour of metallic powders, is modified in the present
study by incorporating the tap density term so that it can be success
fully applied to ceramic powders. The modified equation is found to fi
t very neatly to the experimental data obtained for the powders used i
n the investigation. The validity of the equation is established theor
etically. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
