Abstract
A new method of analysing spectra, based on a genetic algorithm, is pr esented. The algorithm reconstructs spectra to be analysed from a comb ination of previously measured 'library' functions by producing a numb er of trial solutions and 'evolving' them to obtain an optimal solutio n. The method is tested by using spectra obtained from a real Ge(Li) d etector.
