Abstract
The composition and structure of the Au(111) surface has been studied by STM during chloride-induced dissolution. Long-range ordered dimer i mages were obtained and interpreted, because of their molecular dimens ions, as (AuCl3)(2) species. It is argued that our approach to analyzi ng STM-data may be generally useful in identifying surface compounds. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
