The authors have been reported a new disease complex observed during t
he pathological examinations carried out to diagnose swine dysentery.
The pathological changes affected the intestines from the distal part
of ileum until the beginning of appendix and caecum. Four pathological
pictures can be differentiated according to that adenomatosis, ol inf
lammatory, proliferative, as well as degenerative alterations are the
most significant in them: porcine intestinal adenomatosis (PIA), regio
nal ileitis: necrotic enteritis and proliferative haemorrhagic enterop
athy. Usually in older stocks, diarrhoea and weakening are the common
causes of death losses. The causative organism is Lawsonia intracellul
aris (''Campylobacter-like organism'' or ''ileal symbiont bacterium'')
. Diagnosis of cases with negative or non-characteristic pathological
findings is difficult. The most reliable test is the PCR test carried
out with feces or sections of intestines. At the authors' laboratory,
a modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain method has been used for the demonstrat
ion of the causative organism in the intestinal wall.
