We demonstrate that conditions of group velocity mismatch required for
nonlinear pulse compression in the ultraviolet can be achieved using
pulses with properly tilted fronts. We also show that nonlinear compre
ssion of third-harmonic pulses can be performed in type I phase matchi
ng configuration. Experimentally we demonstrate the 351-nm pulse compr
ession from 1.3 ps down to 140 fs using the frequency tripling scheme
