Abstract
The structure and function of proteins and polynucleic acids in aqueou s solutions are strongly influenced by their interaction with electrol ytes and by the presence of water. We have investigated the changes in water structure around chloride ions induced by the proximity of biol ogical macromolecules and we find that features characteristic of a mo dified state of water exist over a length scale of a few angstrom.
