The processability, mechanical properties and flame resistance of glas
s fiber reinforced pultruded novolac type phenolic resin based composi
te have been investigated. The suitable viscosity of novolac, between
1200-2700 cps, for pultrusion processes was synthesized. The novolac t
ype phenolic resin shows lower processing temperature, longer pot life
, and lower water content than the resole type resin. Hence, the novol
ac phenolic resin is more stable in the pultrusion process than the re
sole resin. The resultant composites of novolac type showed good mecha
nical properties and high flame resistance. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science
