An efficient phenomenological model describing the temperature depende
nce of the output power of multiquantum well (MQW) lasers is presented
. The model can predict all the general features of the experimental r
esults. The effect of series resistance, thermal resistance, cavity le
ngth, leakage current, and facet reflectivity on the maximum achievabl
e power are analyzed in a systematic manner. The calculated maximum op
erating temperature (T-m), defined as the heat sink temperature at whi
ch the saturated output power vanishes due to heating, is in reasonabl
e agreement with reported experimental results. (C) 1997 American Inst
