The normal grain growth sweep constant, theta, is determined from a v
olume-based continuity equation, and equivalent forms of theta are gi
ven for various distribution parameters and normalization factors. A s
imple algorithm to obtain theta from experimental data is also presen
ted. The significance of introducing a stochastic component to the gra
in growth is described, and the extension of the sweep constant concep
