A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method is des
cribed for the identification and determination of two toxic compounds
, atractyloside and carboxyatractyloside, in a 60% methanolic extract
of Atractylis gummifera L. roots. Separation was achieved in 55 min wi
th a water-acetonitile gradient in the presence of trifluoroacetic aci
d. Detection was effected with a light-scattering detector. The detect
ion limit was determined and was ca. 9 mu g of atractyloside standard
injected. The method of quantification was validated.
