Abstract
The stereoselective synthesis of alpha-methyl substituted penicillin b y Fe-III-Cu-II and Mn-III-Cu-II promoted cyclizations and and its rela tionship with the Baldwin's INPS (isopenicillin N synthase) mechanisti c hypothesis on the biosynthesis of penicillin is described.
