The influence of high pressure (0-12 GPa) on the fluorescence lifetime
tau of the E-2 level of Cr3+ ion in MgO crystal is considered. On the
basis of the concept of changing the oscillator strength f, the spin-
orbital coupling parameter xi, under high pressure, taking into accoun
t that the position of the R line, the linear compression rate k and t
he refractive index n are functions of pressure, the pressure-induced
change of fluorescence lifetime tau for the E-2 --> (4)A(2) transition
in MgO:Cr3+ has been calculated. Good agreement was found between the
calculated and measured tau over the mentioned pressure range.
