Feline corneal sequestration is a disease that occurs primarily in Per
sian cats as well as in the Siamese, Burmese and Abessinian breeds. A
brown-black plaque in the center of the cornea is typical. The disease
is assocoated with epiphora, blepharospasm, and chemosis and can be e
xtremely painful. Although the exact etiology has not been determined,
previous chronic corneal damage is suspected to play a major role. A
primary stromal corneal dystrophy due to changes in the corneal metabo
lism may be the main cause. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance
is possible. Treatment can be either surgical (superficial keratectom
y) or non-surgical.
