In order to save casting strands as well as investment and operational
costs, efforts are now made to increase billet production by using hi
gher casting speeds on. existing strands, typically 4 to 6 m/min inste
ad of 2.5 to 3.5 m/min. The key to the realization of such high castin
g speeds is the mould, where a strong and homogeneous solid strand she
ll has to be obtained during initial solidification. This paper shows
how theoritical considerations helped to develop a technological solut
ion for high speed casting.
