Abstract
In order to save casting strands as well as investment and operational costs, efforts are now made to increase billet production by using hi gher casting speeds on. existing strands, typically 4 to 6 m/min inste ad of 2.5 to 3.5 m/min. The key to the realization of such high castin g speeds is the mould, where a strong and homogeneous solid strand she ll has to be obtained during initial solidification. This paper shows how theoritical considerations helped to develop a technological solut ion for high speed casting.
