Steel users expect as defect-free a product as possible to permit safe
and reliable service over many years. The main defects and non-confor
mities occur in the steelmaking and further treatment processes. The f
ollowing study sets out to indicate the technical limits to steel prod
uct inspections and test possibilities and to thereby create a foundat
ion for open and forthright discussion with the users and consumers ab
out the ''zero-defect'' concept.
