The important points of change in the concept of interpretation are de
monstrated in a journey through the history of psychoanalytic theory,
with particular emphasis on the discussion of the concept's clinical a
pplication. The way in which the theoretical development of the concep
t, its clinical understanding and modifications in its usage are inter
woven, is illustrated. In order to do this, the Anglo-American traditi
on in the period after the Second World War is examined in its develop
ment, as this also reflects the main theoretical developments within G
erman psychoanalysis.
