Ja. Conger et al., MEASURING CHARISMA - DIMENSIONALITY AND VALIDITY OF THE CONGER-KANUNGO SCALE OF CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP, Canadian journal of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, 14(3), 1997, pp. 290-302
As part of an ongoing research program on charismatic leadership, Cong
er and Kanungo (1994) developed and tested a questionnaire to measure
the perceived behavioural dimensions of charismatic leadership as prop
osed in their model (1987, 1988). This article reports on further anal
yses of the dimensionality and validity of the Conger-Kanungo scale. I
t begins with a reanalysis of the data from the 1994 study. It then re
ports on three separate studies conducted in the United States using m
anagers (N=103) in Canada using political party delegates (N=71) and i
n India using clerical staff (N=98) to examine convergent and discrimi
nant validity. The results of the dimensionality analyses suggest five
-factor model consistent with the Weberian notion of charismatic leade
rship. The results of the US, Canadian, and Indian studies provide fur
ther evidence that the Conger-Kanungo scale has acceptable reliability
and validity as a diagnostic tool in diverse contexts.
