Abstract
A new analytical expression for the surface tension of a planar liquid -vapour interface is obtained. It is based on the Fowler approximation and the statistical-mechanical perturbation approach in the theory of liquids. The expression obtained is explicit in the equilibrium liqui d density. Theoretical predictions are shown to be consistent with the results of Monte Carlo and molecular-dynamics simulations of the Lenn ard-Jones fluid.
