The description of Dauerwald which Troup gave in 1927 remains valid to
day. Dauerwald is not a silvicultural system in itself, but encompasse
s a range of systems; and the management of forests under no particula
r system, but following the Dauerwald principles. The woodlands on the
Barenthoren estate in northern Germany, which Troup described, have c
hanged considerably since then, but the Dauerwald approach has continu
ed to be applied, with appropriate adaptation. Interest in this type o
f management has increased throughout Europe in recent years. The deba
te on the need for formal silvicultural systems and yield control is s
till current, but the outlook for Dauerwald, in its widest sense, appe
ars to be good.
