The paper considers a new method for melting ice on overhead lines by
using an ice-melting device consisting of two three-phase reactive pow
er sources connected to the ends of the ice-covered section. One of th
e reactive power sources is a consumer of reactive energy, while the o
ther is a generator of reactive energy. The method makes it possible t
o melt ice on an overhead line without disconnecting the line and cons
umers. The paper gives results of calculations which confirm the effic
iency of the method. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserve
