Abstract
The fusion (F) protein of simian virus 5 (strain W3A) induced extensiv e cell fusion in BHK cells when expressed alone, while that of strain WR did not. Mutational analysis demonstrated that the fusing activity can be transferred to the WR F protein by a proline residue at positio n 22 of subunit W3A F2.
