The reaction of C-60 fullerene with carboalkoxycarbenoids generated by
Rh-2(OAc)(4)-catalyzed decomposition of alpha-diazoester precursors i
s reported. This reaction is the first example of a transition metal c
atalyzed carbenoid reaction with fullerene and represents a significat
ive improvement in terms of reaction conditions, selectivity of the pr
oducts obtained, and yields over previously reported methods.
