Abstract
Using Condon's quantum oscillator methodology to examine the implicati ons for optical rotary behavior of the classical electromagnetic field s, we provide a simple derivation showing that nonreciprocity is not t o be expected in ordinary chiral-like media. Furthermore, we conclude that the only way to achieve such desired nonreciprocal attributes is to combine such chiral materials with known nonreciprocating media. (C ) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
