El. Olsen, THE LYMAN-ALPHA LINE FROM THE SOLAR-WIND ACCELERATION REGION - RESULTS FROM AN 8-MOMENT APPROXIMATION 2-FLUID SOLAR-WIND MODEL, Geophysical research letters, 24(22), 1997, pp. 2873-2876
We investigate neutral hydrogen in an eight-moment, two-fluid, high sp
eed solar wind model. In this model the proton heat flux decreases rap
idly in the solar wind acceleration region, and extended coronal heati
ng of the proton gas leads to high coronal proton temperatures and lar
ge solar wind flow speeds. The properties of the Lyman-alpha line from
the neutral hydrogen in two such models are studied. We show that the
temperature maximum in the corona inferred from the observed Lyman-al
pha line may be more than 20% lower than the proton temperature maximu
m.
