Experimental data on N-2 on Ni(110), taken some 16 years ago, are re-a
nalyzed in view of new results on the external vibrations of N-2 on Ni
(110) obtained by inelastic helium scattering. On the basis of a three
-state lattice gas model we can explain in a self-consistent manner th
e equilibrium data for the coverage dependent isosteric heat and entro
py, as well as the thermal desorption data. Although thought to be a s
imple model for weak chemisorption, the N-2 on Ni(110) system exhibits
intriguing and complex compensation effects between the energetic and
entropic driving forces.
