Most of what is known about the conditions under which mood dependent
memory (MDM) occurs, and the factors that enable its emergence, has co
me from cognitively oriented research involving experimentally engende
red moods in normal subjects (typically university undergraduates). To
date, little attention has been paid to the possibility of demonstrat
ing MDM in people who experienced marked shifts in mood state as a con
sequence of a psychopathological condition. By studying patients with
rapid-cycling bipolar illness, we sought to explore this possibility a
nd to establish whether findings derived from cognitively oriented stu
dies of MDM can be generalised to a clinically relevant context.
