The aim of this paper is to prove a statement about the existence of B
uchsbaum algebras in terms of a new invariant introduced and studied b
y Goto [3], see also [1]. Our paper shows that this invariant provides
the correct way of approaching the description of Buchsbaum algebras.
In order to prove our theorems, we need some applications of the theo
ry of Grobner bases. Moreover, we describe Goto's invariant in terms o
f Grobner bases. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
