R. Klouda et al., EFFECTS IN NEMATIC CELLS WITH BROKEN CENTROSYMMETRY, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals science and technology. Section A, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals, 304, 1997, pp. 133-138
Unipolar electro-optic and nonlinear optical effects are observed in a
nematic liquid crystal cell with broken inversion symmetry. The cell
is bounded by two plates which produce electric surface polarizations
normal to the plates. When the two surfaces are different a unipolar e
lectrooptic effect is observed: the electric field-induced director di
stortions occur only for one polarity of the field and not for the opp
osite polarity (''optical diode'' effect). Another manifestation of th
e symmetry breaking is strong second harmonic generation by the cell.
