Some recent results of the studies of subsurface deformations, splay-b
end elasticity and surface-induced order in confined liquid crystals a
re presented. The subsurface deformations are studied using molecular
description of the ordering, and Landaude Gennes approach is used to i
nterpret a DNMR study of wetting transitions in microconfined 5CB and
for the analysis of fluctuations and forces in partially ordered nemat
ic systems.
